How Often Should You Clean Your Carpets?

Carpet is a filter. Over time it traps dust, pollen, pet dander, food particles and soil that vacuuming alone cannot remove. How often you need to clean it depends on your household, but a few simple guidelines make it easy.

Vacuuming schedule

  • High-traffic areas (entryways, hallways, living rooms): two to three times a week
  • Bedrooms and low-traffic rooms: weekly
  • Homes with pets, smokers or allergy sufferers: as often as daily in problem areas

Use a vacuum with a good filter and empty it before it is full. Slow, overlapping passes pick up far more than a quick pass.

Professional carpet cleaning schedule

A common guideline is a deep clean about every 12 to 18 months. Shorten that interval if you have:

  • Pets, especially with accidents or shedding
  • Children or lots of foot traffic
  • Allergies or asthma in the household
  • Light-colored carpet that shows soil easily
  • Recently moved in, or an unknown carpet history

Rentals are a special case: many leases require professional cleaning at move-out, and a deep clean at move-in ensures you start fresh. See our move-out checklist.

Signs your carpet is overdue

  • Dark, matted pathways where people walk most
  • Lingering odors, even after vacuuming
  • Stains that keep reappearing after spot cleaning (wicking)
  • Itchy eyes, sneezing or allergy flare-ups indoors
  • The carpet feels stiff, gritty or sticky

What professional cleaning does differently

Hot-water extraction, often called steam cleaning, injects heated water and cleaning solution into the carpet and immediately pulls it back out along with loosened soil, allergens and residue. A professional also pre-treats stains, handles pet odor and uses equipment strong enough to dry the carpet quickly, which prevents mildew.

Quick stain tips between cleanings

  1. Blot, never rub. Rubbing pushes the stain deeper and fuzzes the fibers.
  2. Act fast. The sooner you blot, the more you lift.
  3. Use cool water and a small amount of mild detergent for most food and drink spills. Avoid hot water on unknown stains; it can set them.
  4. Test first. Try any cleaner in a hidden spot.
  5. Call a pro for pet urine, wine, ink, grease or anything you cannot lift in a couple of tries.

Do not forget upholstery and rugs

Sofas, chairs and area rugs collect the same dust and oils as carpet. Cleaning them on the same schedule keeps a room consistently fresh. We cover both in our carpet and upholstery cleaning service.

Frequently asked questions

Is steam cleaning the same as hot-water extraction?

Commonly yes. The terms are used interchangeably for deep cleaning that injects hot water and cleaning solution and then extracts it with strong suction.

How long does carpet take to dry?

Usually a few hours, sometimes longer depending on humidity, carpet thickness and airflow. Fans and open windows help.

Will professional cleaning remove pet odors?

Often, especially when the source is treated properly. Severe or old urine contamination may need additional treatment.
